The coca de Sant Joan was reborn in Barcelona to a household that owned an oven. Busy as they have been, that they had no time to purchase any presents for their son John for his Saint’s day. So the father, displaying a great capability for improvisation and endurance, designed a cake with candied fruit and pine nuts and invited household and staff to share the celebration. Many saints are honoured with a cake on their holy day. In Catalonia, Spain, his birthday, on June 24th, is celebrated exuberantly with nice bonfires. Those fires symbolize the sun and so, so as to purify the soul, the folks burn every little thing that they are not looking for or want.
